Seahaven FM faces closure after 14 years of broadcast

The popular local radio station in East Sussex, Seahaven FM, announced on Friday 29th November that it may close down in the new year. Since that announcement the local community has suggested ways in which it might support the station to continue.

The station takes a different approach to other radio stations, most of whom have a limited playlist, Seahaven FM is popular because of the local content and the broad mix of popular hit music from the 1950s across eight decades up to the latest chart and new releases, which appeal to all age groups.

The station also provides local news, weather, traffic and events as well as regular interviews with local people from across Lewes District and Eastbourne Borough. Unfortunately, the station, run by mainly volunteers and operating under a Community Licence from Ofcom, hadn’t been able to secure sufficient long-term funding. Added to this, the station has an ageing management and key people with both family and medical issues. Seahaven FM announced on Friday 29th November that it plans to cease broadcasting at noon on Friday 10 January 2025, exactly 14 years after it began programmes on FM in the Lower Ouse Valley, and just over four years since it launched during the pandemic lockdown, broadcasting across Eastbourne.

Following the announcement, the station received many, many messages of support by phone, email and on social media including offers of regular financial support.

Station Manager Nick Mallinson said: “We are humbled by the wonderful reaction from our listeners and advertisers. We know we provide a service that entertains, informs and provides company for people, and our daily programmes, quizzes and features are part of their routine. It is a huge privilege to have become part of people’s lives. “Since our initial announcement, we have been approached by several people who are keen to support the station with expertise and funding. We are also exploring a subscription scheme to help raise funds to keep the station going. "More details can be found on the radio station's website www.seahavenfm.radio and updates will be posted on social media.
